Personal advice

We offer you personal advice on development and setup questions comfortably at home. Just a few easy-to-assemble and safe movement elements, like a climbing triangle, change your child's activity level and thus their mood for the better. But that is only the beginning; with us, you can turn your home into a place where your child can always follow their need for movement and relaxation, and then something magical happens—as if by magic, calmness settles in with you, in your child, and in you!

We are Isabell, Erik, and Kosmo. We founded Kletterling out of necessity: Quality is so often feigned with marketing nonsense. We want as much clarity as possible. What material is my child's toy made of, where does it come from, and were chemicals used? How is the safety, and is it really made in Europe? Made in China, assembled in Germany, and then called Made in Germany does not exist with us. All products come from small makers in Europe, to whom we give their well-deserved platform here. Often, the problem lies in customer service in a foreign language, which we fully take over because we love to be in contact with you, which unfortunately is becoming rarer nowadays.

Also, when you buy from us, you use secure payment methods in Germany from a German company, which gives you a good feeling and security so that you can fully focus on why you are here: to find the right movement toy for your child.

Thank you for your trust!

What is a Pikler triangle?

A Pikler triangle is a wooden climbing frame for children. It consists of a triangular frame with rungs that serve as climbing aids. There are different types of Pikler triangles, including single-hinged and fixed-screw models in various heights from 60 to 87 cm. There are also multi-jointed models, but these are not DIN EN-71 compliant and therefore not safe enough for young children. The Pikler triangle can be used both indoors and outdoors and, thanks to the rungs, also offers the option of attaching slide boards that can be adapted to the child's individual development.

Why do children need a Pikler triangle?

A Pikler triangle supports the independent development of gross motor skills in babies and toddlers. By climbing on the device, they can learn about and accept their limits. Compared with other climbing frames on playgrounds, the Pikler triangle allows parents to watch their child's exploration relaxedly. Because of its height-adjusted size, the device also spares parents from having to sit right next to the child to catch potential falls. Each child explores the triangle at their own pace and at their current stage of development. In the crawling stage, for example, they might crawl under the triangle, while in the next phase they try to pull themselves up on it. The Pikler triangle does not need to be adapted to the current developmental stage, because it grows with the child and with their motor skills.

The right age for a Pikler triangle

As soon as your child is crawling and can independently overcome a threshold of about 10 cm, a Pikler triangle is a good choice to support further development. The device can then be used up to the age of six to eight years, with older children often integrating the climbing frame into their play and using it imaginatively. However, we have also heard from customers that even older children still play with it.

How long do children play on the Pikler triangle?

Children's imagination is limitless, so older children can also continue to use the Pikler triangle for free play. But if the device is not combined with other play equipment and the child spends much time on it without guidance, they will climb over the top rung at the latest by the age of two. If the device is combined with other equipment, it can be used as a motor challenge until at least four years of age. That, however, only considers physical abilities — meaning that physically it will no longer be a challenge from around age 4, and it then becomes part of daily play and continues to be actively used for several more years to expend energy.

How to find the right Pikler triangle for your child

When it comes to finding a suitable Pikler triangle for your child, there are several important factors to consider. It is especially important that the climbing triangle meets your child's needs in terms of size, functionality, and safety.

The right size: From small to large

The size of the Pikler triangle is an important factor when choosing the right model. For smaller under-3 groups and private users who prefer a lower height, the lowest and narrowest model with a height of up to 60 cm is perfect. This is the Zicklein, which is also available as a set (Zickenling-Set).

For home use, a medium-sized climbing triangle with a height of 70 cm is optimal. That is our Koala and it is even foldable within 10 seconds. The corresponding set with slide and arch is the Koalaling.

Some providers, however, offer climbing triangles over 90 cm in the hope that parents will think it needs to be particularly tall. In fact, height is irrelevant for child development. Children care more about moving than climbing particularly high.

Another danger of oversized climbing triangles is the risk of injury. Especially small children, who are not yet very skilled in their motor abilities, can injure themselves when sliding from top to bottom on an attached slide.

If you still want to give your child extra fun, you should avoid extreme heights and instead invest in additional equipment like a slide, a rope ladder and a wall bars instead.

Make the most of Pikler triangle combination options

Combining different devices with the Pikler triangle repeatedly opens up new possibilities for children and challenges them. With a rope ladder, a climbing slide and a slide board, the climbing triangle can be transformed into a base for attachments.

Our largest Pikler triangles, Orang-Utan and Panda, have a height of 87 cm, so 5-6 year olds can also use the space under the triangle as a den. In combination with a blanket or our fox den, endless possibilities for creative play arise.

Fixed, foldable, or angle-adjustable?

The choice of a fixed, foldable, or angle-adjustable climbing triangle depends on your needs and the size of your space. For home use, foldable models like the Zicklein, the Koala and the Panda are best suited, as they can be easily stored when space is limited. In addition, the Zicklein and the Panda are height-adjustable and can be disassembled into two halves in less than 30 seconds.

Our Orang-Utan, which is unique in its shape with three different sides, cannot be folded, but it does offer the possibility for the child to gain new experiences again and again by rotating it. It is also as sturdy as no other Pikler triangle because all sides are fastened together.

Pikler triangle: Which material is best?

Material also plays an important role when buying a Pikler triangle. It should be robust, durable, and of course safe for children.

Wood is the most commonly used material and has several advantages over plastic. It is more natural, more environmentally friendly, and also looks nice. It is also robust and durable.

However, there are some disadvantages. The wood fibers can raise when exposed to moisture. That is why we always include a sanding pad, so the wood of a climber can be sanded smooth again and again. To prevent the wood from warping, we use plywood. The wood is pressed in many layers and cannot warp. Splinters cannot form either because we process the wood properly. That is why we pay attention to perfect quality.

Alternatives to wood are plastic. Plastic is usually cheaper than wood and can also be cleaned more easily. However, it is not as robust and durable as wood and can contain harmful chemicals. Moreover, it is plastic, and that is exactly what we do not want for our children, right?

Furthermore, birch plywood is not only significantly more robust than solid wood, it is also significantly lighter, making it the perfect material for a Pikler triangle.

Conclusion

The Pikler triangle is a great toy for children that promotes their motor skills and provides a lot of fun. When buying, you should consider a few things, such as the size of the climbing triangle, the material, and whether it should be foldable, fixed, or angle-adjustable.

Lower models (or height-adjustable ones like Zicklein or Panda) are suitable for younger children, while older children and advanced climbers prefer taller models so they can also build a den underneath. Wood is the most commonly used material, but plywood like our birch plywood should be chosen. Also always check which glue is used in the plywood so you can ensure the formaldehyde content is particularly low. We use only a lignin-based glue, which emits significantly fewer pollutants than other plywood variants commonly available on the market.

If you keep these things in mind and buy a high-quality Pikler triangle, you and your children will surely enjoy it for many years, before it can be sanded down and passed on like new within the family. Our climbers are made for generations. That is why we also offer a lifetime spare parts guarantee.
